As summer begins, the number of days until graduation is dwindling. This school year went by so fast, and it feels like just yesterday we were coming in as freshmen. From dominating spirit week to dancing in the senior circle at Prom, we have been there for each other and shared an amazing high school experience. Filled with memories that we will never forget, this year was definitely a year to remember. The majority of this class has been with each other since grade school; some of us have even attended pre-school and kindergarten together. We have grown so close as a class, and when the time comes to walk across that stage, I know that we will have made a difference on each other. I honestly wouldn’t have wanted to spend my four years with any other class. Some of us may have had our differences, but when we look back in ten years, we will realize how important every single one of us was and the impact they made on us. Although we may be going our separate ways in life, I know that this town of Peoria Heights will always have a little piece of our hearts. It’s where we grew up, made our memories, and became the young adults that we are today. We have made our mark on this town, and in turn it made its mark on us. I will miss not only this class but also all of the other classes, and even some of the teachers as well. Class of 2013, I wish you the best of luck in everything you do. This isn’t a goodbye; it’s just a see ya later.
Where do you even start when it comes to “tips for underclassmen?” There are so many. I guess we could first start off with getting good grades. Grades are very important all four years of high school. DO NOT wait until junior or senior year to start trying. Colleges look at your grades all the way back to your first day of high school. High GPAs can often get you high scholarships. Hard work will eventually pay off!
Another tip would be to take as many math and science classes as possible. Many colleges require three or sometimes even four, just to be accepted into the college. The third tip I would give underclassmen is to be VERY involved. Do as many school activities as possible. Not just sports, but things like Key Club, Letterman’s, Drama Club, etc. This not only keeps you involved, but colleges look at your activities! They want students who are very involved with their school and community. Involvement is also big when you’re applying for scholarships. Scholarships are often awarded to those who are very involved. Last, you have the little tips. During your senior year DO NOT procrastinate on your senior memory book. Make the most of your four years of high school. High school goes by very fast. Cherish every moment with the people around you. After high school, you may not see these people again. And we all say “I can’t wait to be a senior so I can graduate. High school is taking forever” I’ve said it, and honestly it doesn’t take forever. Before you know it you’re ordering your cap and gown, celebrating your last homecoming, attending your last prom, etc. Enjoy the moments while you can. As a graduating senior, I’m proud to say I have enjoyed my high school experience. Take high school seriously. There is no time to slack. Spend your time wisely, but don’t forget to enjoy the four years that you have. Best of luck to all the future seniors of 2014, 2015, and 2016! And congratulations to the current seniors of the 2013 class! It’s said that prom is the best night of your life. That certainly rang true for some people on Saturday night. The 2013 PHHS prom was held at Weaver Ridge, a place that offers a beautiful view, a wonderful meal, and a great time. Students were given the chance to free themselves of the stress of school by having a good time. It’s not a surprise that the turnout was great. The dance floor was never lonely as many people jumped right in to participate in the “Wobble” and the “Cupid Shuffle.” However, the dancing wasn’t the highlight of the dance. Prom court was.
Juniors: Brayton Wallace, Kayla Peterson, Matt Dang, Hanna Winkler, Dominic Simpson, Emma Frederick, Mahleia Long, and Jake Wilson. Seniors: Kris Whalen, Brittney Heid, Tyler Poucher, Ally LaHood, Zack Wilson, Amber Phillips, John Moore, and Courtney Michael. The 2013 PHHS prom king and queen titles were given Brayton Wallace and Hanna Winkler. Congratulations to everyone on prom court! Thank you to everyone who attended prom. It wouldn’t have been the same without you. An even bigger thank you to the juniors who set the event up. You made it worth our while. “A candle is but a simple thing. It starts with just a little string.” The National Honor Society had their induction ceremony last Friday. It was held at Avanti’s during lunch time. The returning members put on the event. They read cards pertaining to the different values of the group. They also lit candles that represented the values. The new inductees received candles to light off of the main unity candle. At the end they signed the National Honor Society Book, signifying that they were officially in the group. Seven juniors and two seniors were invited to be a part of the group. It is a huge honor to be invited. The National Honor Society is a national organization. It looks great on college and scholarship applications. The new members had to have a 3.2 GPA and be nominated by over fifty percent of the teachers and staff. They were nominated if they had a good attitude in class, showed leadership abilities, and worked hard. The new junior inductees this year were: Emma Frederick, Matt Dang, Jake Wilson, Sierra Stein, Bobby Miller, Charles Bender, and Nick Runyon. The new senior inductees were Lindsey Avena and Zack Wilson. Congratulations to the new inductees!!!
