This year, Student Council is changing in a large and exciting way. In past years, Student Council has strictly planned Homecoming and other small tasks; however, starting this year, Student Council will become much more of a student government. While Student Council will still plan Homecoming, it will also do many other things throughout the year such as attending school board meetings, attending village board meetings, and trying to make any changes to the school that it deems fit. What does this mean for PHHS students? It means that through their officers, students will be able to have their voices heard for any suggestions they have to improve the school. Whether the improvements be large or small, the new Student Council is built around a general goal: to improve the school in any way that a Student Council can. Expect to see a lot more out of the Peoria Heights High School Student Council very soon!

Fall is right around the corner, and that means it’s fall festival time! Canton held their festival last week. The highlight of the Canton Friendship Days is the parade. The parade included floats, bands and vintage cars. Also last week, Pekin held their Marigold Festival. The festival includes a carnival, a pageant, etc. Last week the Annual Pumpkin Festival started up. They had some new things. Some worked out, some didn’t. Even though it got rained out Friday, it was still a very successful year! On October 24th and 25th Petersburg is hosting a fall festival at Lincoln’s New Salem. Life from the 1830s will be demonstrated. These people will demonstrate daily tasks such as candle dipping, butter churning, soap making, basket making, spinning wool, gardening, natural dyeing, and fishing with nets. It would be a very interesting thing to go see for yourself.
Do you like to read books? If so, the library club might be the perfect thing for you! The library club is for people to come together and discuss different books. Around Christmas time you will also go to the grade school and read books to the children. This month the library club will be meeting multiple authors and learning about their experiences. It’s not too late to join! Meetings are held during “A” lunch. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Poole.
Recently, all of the students here at Peoria Heights filled out a survey and on the survey they were asked to fill in their top career choices. Well, the results are in! After going through all of the surveys, we now know what careers students at Peoria Heights are most interested in. At the top of the list was the medical category, which includes doctors, nurses, surgeons, vets, etc. Medical was by far the top choice. However, there was a tie for second most popular career. The sports industry and law both came in as the second most popular, followed by technology and education/teaching. There also seemed to be interests in media (journalism, newspaper editing, etc.), construction, and the military. So, knowing now what careers Peoria Heights students are interested in, we can use this information to plan career fairs and speakers. In doing this, we hope to help PHHS students succeed in whatever career choice that they choose!
The student council members have had a couple of meetings these past two weeks. T these, they discussed homecoming themes, spirit week days, and colors for homecoming. This year’s homecoming theme is Disney, and the spirit week themes will be posted soon. This year, Mrs. Allen told the members that they’re doing much more this year instead of just homecoming. The members will now be attending the Peoria Heights Village meetings and the school board meetings. This year’s members include:

If you have an interest in student council and would like to be a part of it, elections will be at the end of this school year. As you may remember, there was a pep assembly held on Friday, August 28th at 2 p.m., and it was a blast. It was great practice for the dance and cheerleaders, and it helped get the boys ready for their first game! At the pep assembly, the dance team, cheer squad, and band performed, then the coaches introduced their sport and players. To wrap it all up, the classes did the spirt challenge, which the seniors won. The pep assembly was followed by the first game at 7 p.m. The game was home and the boys put up a huge fight to come out victorious, wining with a score of 40-34. Their second game was on Friday, the 4th at 7 p.m. in Princeville. The boys lost with a score of 6-27. Giving them a record of 1-1. Their next game will be on Friday, the 11th at 7 p.m. in Bushnell. Come out and support your Patriots!
How do you like all that is going on outside? Over the summer the old parking lot was tore up and a new concrete lot was made. You may have also noticed that they are still working on the press box and Mr. Smith’s class is working on the ticket booth. On these, they are putting blue siding on and a new roof. Also, new stairs and new railings were made, along with a new ramp for any handicap people so they can get to the stands and watch the games. Make sure you go check out all the new changes at the next home football game.
