This year’s play has been decided! We will be doing the Odd Couple by Neil Simon. The original play consisted of two guys, Felix and Oscar. The play we will be performing is about two girls, Olive and Florence. It will be a new experience for people who have seen the play or watched the movie before. It’s a comedy, but it’s more for mature audiences. The plot is about two mismatched characters who are both divorced and trying to live together in the same apartment. Olive is sloppy and casual while Florence is neat and tidy. This causes a lot of trouble to arise between the two characters. The Cast List includes: James J., Shawna S., Emmy T., Susan K., Brandon M., Kara S., Brianna V., and Calia W. This year’s play will be directed by Mr. Jimmy Ulrich. They have changed the date of the play. This year the play will be performed on November 7 at The Grade School. So come and enjoy a great show!
Many crazy things have being going on in the world pertaining to the National Football League. Starting running back for the Ravens, Ray Rice, got caught on camera of what it looks like him beating his wife unconscious in an elevator. Star running back, Adrian Peterson, got charged with felony injury to a child using a tree branch to discipline his child. Spanking- with an open hand or an object like switch- is not illegal in the United States. Adrian Peterson quotes “I am not a perfect parent, but without a doubt, I’m not a child abuser either.” My opinion for the Adrian Peterson case, if he was just disciplining his child like he says, he shouldn’t get a punishment. Ray Rice’s case is a little bit different. The video is him punching his wife, Janay Palmer, until she gets knocked out. Only the people in the event know the true story of what went on in both scenes. In both cases, my opinion really doesn’t matter. I believe if either get a punishment, they both should be able to play in the future. I do believe in second chances no matter what the crime is. Do you guys think there should be a punishment? What’s the first thing you think of when picturing Las Vegas, Nevada? Casinos, lights, and skyscrapers right? How about books and their authors, and a lot of them? Well, that’s what Mrs. Poole experienced when she went out to Vegas this summer for the American Library Conference from June 26 to July 1.
The American Library Conference is an annual event where hundreds of librarians, authors, and book lovers come together for a week of discovering new books and their authors. Some of the authors that were there included: Mark Brown, Louis Lowry, Ally Condie, and even Stan Lee. All of these authors were there promoting their new books and movies. While meeting all these authors, Mrs. Poole got to take home some free books. The authors, trying to promote their books, gave away hundreds of free copies to anyone that stopped by. Mrs. Poole left the conference with over 50 new books! 15 of which can now be found in our library. Overall, Mrs. Poole says she had a lot of fun at the conference. She got to bring home some new books, meet some new authors, and would recommend the conference to anyone who is interested in books. The admission price is only $35 dollars, and the next conference is from January 30 to February 3 in Chicago. For any more info, see Mrs. Poole or check out her bulletin board where she has posted some pictures of her conference Mr. Piper is teaching Music Appreciation this year. He has 21 students in his class. He’s teaching the class in a different way than it was taught last year. He’s teaching 1000 year old music and having the students do questions and take quizzes over it. As well as Music Appreciation, Mr. Piper is the marching band teacher. There are 27 people in marching band. Over the summer, the freshman and new students to Peoria Heights practiced three days in early July and went over basics, while returning students practiced scramble drills. They are planning on playing at volleyball senior night and at the Bradford Labor Day Parade. For games, they are going to play Strutter by Kiss, House of the Rising Sun, and 7 Nation Army by White Stripes. If you are still interested in band, and you have played a classical instrument before, talk to Mr. Piper as soon as you can.
