Will you be my Valentine? This is a question you will all start asking soon to someone you like or have a crush on. The real question though is what is the real reason behind Valentine’s Day? Why do we have this holiday? What’s the meaning behind it?
The celebration of the day began with the life and death of a man. A bishop by the name of Valentine stood against an Emperor's decree that Roman soldiers could not marry. He married them in secrecy because he thought the Emperor's edict was wrong and went against the glory of young love. Valentine's acts were discovery. Label treason, he was martyred (one who chooses to suffer death rather than renounce religious principles). In memory of Valentine's deeds, Pope Gelasius declared him a saint and the day of his execution, February 14th, became known as Valentine's Day.
So on this day, we must love and cherish the ones close to us. Let’s now think of the consequences and love with all our hearts. For couples, love your partner for all the good things he/she has done in your life such as being there for you, and loving you for who you are and not making you change for the worst but for the better. For parents, love your children and let them know they are in your heart. Even when you’re mad at them, let your kids know your feelings. For teachers, let your students know they are worth something in the world. That they can do wonderful things in their future, and that they can make it if they set their minds to their goals. So let’s make this day a romantic, heart-warming, and sweet day to love the people close to us in our lives.
Have a happy Valentine's Day.
