On February 26, Mrs. Wenzel took Sarah Knott, Shakeysha Collins, Josh Beeney, Zoie Potter, Jessica Quinn, and Jacob Jones on a field trip to the Peoria County Jail to explore their interests in the criminal justice field. They arrived around 9:45 and to start of the day, there was a tour of the jail at 10. The Heights was not the only school there though. We were accompanied by Farmington, Dunlap, and Brimfield. Once the tour started, we walked over to the crime lab and we were given a better insight on what exactly they do and how they handle their homicide investigations. After that, we got to meet with the K-9 unit and to listen in on how their dogs were trained in Germany and you have to speak to the dogs in German for them to understand you. One of the guys that works there got in this big padded suit so we could watch the dog in action with his officer by his side. It was pretty entertaining to watch. Once that was over, we got to take a tour of the jail. It was really interesting to see everything and learn what the plan is when things happen. We actually got to sit in a jail cell to see and feel what the inmates see for days on end. The tour was almost over, so that meant we got to eat because you know when teenagers get hungry, they start to get cranky. Anyways, while we were eating, people from different positions stood up and talked to us about what they do and how much they love their job. We arrived back to school around 2-2:30, so we were there pretty much all day. I know I had a good time and would not mind going again. Mrs. Wenzel thought it was a really great experience for all for us to have and wouldn’t mind going back again. I know after the field trip, I still want to go further on in the criminal justices field.
