The scholastic bowl team has been working hard in practice the past couple weeks to get ready for competitive meets. On Tuesday January 15th, there was a meet in Farmington. Varsity won all three of their matches. On Saturday 19, The Fresh-Soph teams won three and lost five so their overall record is now 10 wins and 11 losses. On Tuesday 22, Varsity defeated Pekin and Washington but lost to Metamora. Their Peoria Area League record is 5-1 and overall the varsity record is 10-6. Five varsity players answered including Matt Dang with 10 and Jesse Lynch with 8 toss-ups. The Fresh-Soph team lost three. Their overall record is 10-14. On Thursday 24, Varsity lost all of their matches except for one. Their record is now 11-9. On Saturday 26, Varsity won two but lost four at Porta. Their record is now 13 wins and 13 losses. On Tuesday 29, Varsity lost two but won one. The matches against Dunlap and Peoria Christian ended with tie-breakers. Dunlap beat them but they defeated Peoria Christian. Their record is now 14-15. On Thursday 31, Varsity defeated Farmington but lost to Knoxville last night. On Saturday 9, Varsity won four matches and lost four. Their record is now 19-20. On Tuesday 5, Varsity won one and lost two. Congratulations to Matt Dang who was named to the Scholastic Bowl Sectional All-Conference Team. He is the number five selection among the twelve honorees. They are seeded fifth in the conference. The scholastic bowl team will be hosting the IHSA Regional in March on Monday 4. On Thursday 7, varsity won two and lost two. Their record is now 22-24. On Saturday 9, Varsity won four and lost three. Their record is now 26-26. They won a 4th place trophy! Come out and support the Scholastic Bowl team!

On February 2, the Peoria Heights wrestling team went Eureka High School for the 1A State Regional meet. The Peoria Heights team is taking three wrestlers to sectionals, Tanner Coleman who placed third in the 113 weight class, Austin Wilson was the champion of his weight class at 138, and Isaac Johnston placed third in the 285. Although Jesse Lynch placed fourth in his weight class of 132, he is an alternate wrestler which means that is one of the top three wrestlers in his weight class can’t make the weight , is in ineligible, or is sick he will move on to sectionals. Sectionals were be held at Olympia High School on February 8 all of the wrestlers wrestled very well unfortunately none of the wrestlers qualified to move on to state.
“Red, blue and white that’s right! Red, blue and white!” The season is coming to an end which means it is time to start seeing the little ones! February 4th, 5th, and 7th the cheerleaders had the girls from the grade school practicing with them! During the practices each cheerleader took a group of girls and taught them everything they needed to know for Friday’s game. The little girls preformed eight cheers and the school song at the game against Brimfield. The performance was great! There were more than sixty girls, ranging from kindergarten to sixth grade, that did cheer camp this year.
Senior night it also right around the corner. February 12, 2013 will be the last home game for the class of 2013. The squad will be losing three seniors: Brittney Heid, Gwen Clayton, and Darious Morris. The journalism class would like to wish these seniors best of luck in their future plans, and good luck to the future cheerleading squad! "Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen." Senior night was full of excitement! JV won their first game and varsity finally pulled through to get another win! Before the game started four seniors, Ally LaHood, Courtney Michael, Amber Phillips, and Jada Jones, were announced. They were each given a build a bear that resembled them in some way. Ally LaHood’s was a panda with a pink, sparkly purse and a cell phone. Courtney Michael’s bear had red, white, and blue shoes, red shorts and awesome sunglasses. Amber Phillips bear was decked out in army clothes with glasses that look similar to hers. Jada Jones’ was a monkey with black leggings, pink boots, and sweet sunglasses. When the clock for warm up hit zero seconds the whole team lined up and performed a dance they made up to the school song. This dance was made up at 3a.m during a lock in. These girls played their heart out and won 46-32. A special thanks to Jessi Webb and Krystal Annino for making the team delicious cake. These four seniors are going to be greatly missed. It’s not going to be the same without them next year.
On January 26, the boys played Monmouth Roseville on a Saturday afternoon. The patriots kept up with Monmouth for the first half. Laurence Henderson had seven rebounds at half and put in a great effort. When the second half begun, Monmouth took the momentum and extended their lead despite a great effort from the patriots. Monmouth Roseville won 72-43.
On January 29, the patriots went head to head with Havana in a conference match up. The patriots started off pressing and made it an up tempo game. Tim Todd scored 18 points in the first half alone and ended the game with 20. At half the patriots were leading 26-18. As the patriots nearly shut down Havana’s best player Jordan Atwater to only 8 points the whole game. As the patriots went on to win 56-46. On February 1, the patriots played BPCA in the Red Out Game for heart disease. The JV set the tone with a win. When varsity started they took an early lead on the Spartans. The tempo was too high for the Spartans, as the Patriots had many break away lay ups. Laurence Henderson, Tim Todd, and Zach Wilson each added 16 points, and emerging sophomore, DeAntrae Mixon added 13. As the Patriots won 81-48. On February 5, Peoria Heights played there cross town rival Peoria Christian. The Patriots took an early lead do to the tempo of the game. The Patriots started off pressing and the press helped them get to an early lead. At one point the patriots lead by 16, and they went into halftime up by 10. The Patriots battled the whole game, but never gave up the lead as PC narrowed the game to only one point down, in the last couple seconds before Tim Todd knocked in two huge free throws to ice the game. Zack Wilson had a game high of 20. Peoria Heights won 52-49. On February 8, the Patriots played against Brimfield in a Prairieland Conference Match up. In the first quarter the Patriots were right with Brimfield, and then the Indians started to pull away in the second quarter. Brimfield lead by 8 points at half, as the Patriots were still in the game. The Brimfield Indians shooting was too good though, as they took over and extended the lead. The Patriots had three players with ten points, Laurence Henderson, Zack Wilson, and Darion Williams. The Patriots lost 62-38. Come out and support the Peoria Heights basketball team. It’s hard to believe this season is almost over. The girls have worked really hard this year. As the new year begins, the season is dwindling down. On Monday, January 14 the team played Lewistown. It was a close game, but they just couldn’t pull through. On Thursday, January 17 the girls played South Fulton. The first half was competitive, but the Lady Rebels took over. It was a great effort by both teams. The girls’ next game is on Friday, January 19 against Havana. Come and cheer on your Lady Patriots to a victory. January 28th is already senior night. Four seniors, Ally LaHood, Jada Jones, Courtney Michael, and Amber Phillips, will be leaving the team this year. This night will be very emotional for the seniors and everyone else on the team. These girls play a huge role as leaders of the team. They push the underclassmen to work harder and improve. They are also working on getting the three juniors ready to be captains next year. The Peoria Heights Patriots wrestling team won their overall meet as a team against Tremont, but lost to El-Paso Gridley on Tuesday. Many of our wrestlers won their individual matches, these wrestlers include: Tanner Coleman who had two wins in the 113, Austin Wilson in the 138, Jesse Lynch in the 132, Phillip Grinslade in the 182, and Isaac Johnston in the 285. The numbers indicate what weight class the wrestlers are in and in which they will wrestle wrestlers in the same weight class. At this last weekend’s Notre Dame wrestling tournament the Patriots wrestled very well against some tough competition the following wrestlers received awards: Tanner Coleman placed first in the 113 weight class, Austin Wilson placed third in the 138 weight class, Damarius Jackson, Isaac Johnston, and Rafael Menchaca placed fourth in their respected weight classes, and Jesse Lynch, Cameron Miller, and Ian Hopkins placed sixth in their respected weight class. The Peoria Heights Wrestling lost to Monmouth/Roseville 60-21 & Midwest Central 48-26 last night. Tanner Coleman won both of his matches last night in the 113 weight class. Single match winners include: Jesse Lynch in the 126, Jake Tinkham in the 170, Rafael Menchaca in the 220, Damarius Jackson in the 195, and Chuck Bender in the 285.
On December 13 the Peoria Heights wrestling team faced Illini Bluffs and Kewanee and unfortunately the team lost both meets. Although the team lost both the had quite a few individual winners, Austin Wilson in the 138, Jacob Tinkham in the 170, Phillip Grinsdale in the 182, Jesse Lynch in the 132, and Isaac Johnston had two in wins in the 285. On January 23 the wrestling team had their senior night, and the faced off against Canton and Peoria High. They lost against both schools as a team, but individual winners were Tanner Coleman had two wins in the 118, Jesse lynch in the 132, Phillip Grinsdale in the 182, and Isaac Johnston won by a forfeit in the 285. On January 16 the wrestling team faced Notre Dame and Olympia they lost against both. Winners in their weight class were, Isaac Johnston had two wins in the 285, and Tanner Coleman also had two wins in the 113 and Austin Wilson in the 138. The next wrestling meet will be on February 2 which will be regionals. B-R-A-D-LEY! This season has been a great season for the Bradley Braves Men’s Basketball team. They’re currently 7-2 which matches their win total from last year and we are only nine games into the season. This season the Braves have been given great play by their seniors who include Jake Eastman, Will Egolf, and Dyricus Simms-Edwards. Jake Eastman has given the Braves solid minutes and about nine points per game. Will Egolf is averaging about 10 points per game. Dyricus Simms-Edwards, who is a four year starter for the Braves, is currently giving them about nine points and roughly three steals per game, which he is ranked fifth in the nation in steals per game. The Braves’ next game is on December 19 at home against Mississippi Valley St. Hope you come out and support our home town Bradley Braves.
During Christmas break, the Peoria Heights Patriots Boys Basketball team had a successful tournament in the annual Marseilles Tournament. The Patriots record was 3-1 over the break. The first win was against Leland-Earlville. The only loss was against Putnam County in which the teams went into double overtime, thanks to a Zack Wilson three point buzzer beater at the end of the fourth quarter. Putnam County ended up pulling away in the second overtime, and the Patriots ended up losing. The next two days the Patriots beat Midland and Flanagan to end the tournament, and finished in fifth place.
Tuesday night, the Boys’ basketball team traveled to Lowpoint-Washburn. The JV team set the tempo, with a close game and a gutsy effort throughout the game. In the last minute, Frankie Kerr drilled a 3-pointer, which ended up being the game winning shot. The varsity game was not as close. The Patriots got out to an early lead thanks to a 23 point effort from Zack Wilson. Every player on the varsity team ended up scoring in the game as the patriots won 71-33. On January 11, the patriots played Knoxville. On a Friday night and battled with them up until the last few minutes of the fourth quarter. The patriots were never able to take the lead. The patriots lost 51-35. On January 15, the basketball team traveled out to Farmington for a Prairie Land Conference match up. The patriots dominated the game with a 21 point 12 rebound performance from Darion Williams. The first quarter the Patriots were struggling and were down one point, but after that they took over and never looked back. Peoria Heights won 63-43. January 21, the Patriots played the Abingdon Commandoes at the Renaissance Center. The game had a college like atmosphere and was a great experience for all the players and fans. The tip off was at noon, as Peoria Heights took an early lead going into halftime with a five point lead. The Commandoes came out ready and took over the game, and recovered the lead. The Patriots ended up narrowing the lead to four points with two minutes left, but there efforts weren’t enough as Abingdon won the game after knocking in some last couple free throws. On January 22, Peoria Heights played North Fulton and took the lead early in the game and never looked back with a huge effort from the junior guard Laurence Henderson who pulled down a game high twelve rebounds and dominated inside the paint. The Patriots won 47-23 in a blow-out Tuesday night. Please come out to home games and support the Peoria Heights Boys’ basketball team. |
