On Friday, November 6th, the Peoria Heights Key Club was part of a banquet held for the 20th Division West Key Clubbers. Division 20 West is part of the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District that the Peoria Heights Key Club is part of. The banquet started off with dinner, as well as a dessert potluck. Next, Lieutenant Governor Charles Schneider conducted a Divisional Council Meeting. At this meeting, topics that were covered ranged from upcoming events to how the nine Key Clubs in 20 West were doing. Finally, there were many games set up, as well as a full gym for basketball, volleyball, and other sports. The banquet was a large success and also raised over $100 for the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District project- the Spastic Paralysis Research Foundation!

It’s that time of year for girls’ basketball again! The first home game will be on December 7th against Rushville at 6:00 PM. They may be a small team but it’s “quality over quantity.” They will continue to work even harder. There are two seniors on the team this year, Jessi Webb and Kelsey Walton, who have been showing great leadership to their fellow teammates. The girls had their first game on Monday the 16th. Unfortunately, they took their first loss, but there is still plenty of time for improvement. It’s a tough conference, but we’re still confident in the girls. The team is also selling Christmas Wreaths for $26 each. If you need more information about the wreaths, or would like to join the team, talk to Coach Winters.
The annual Turkey Tournament is right around the corner! The game times have officially been released. The Patriots will play Dee-Mack Tuesday at 7:30. The next game on Wednesday will be against Quest, starting at 6. Peoria Heights vs Peoria Christian will be Friday at 7:30, with the tournament wrapping up on Saturday vs Illini Bluffs at 5. The Red Storm has set themes for each of these games. The first game will be a red out. See Alex Wilts for more details about the other themes. Come out each day and pack the storm!
The cross country season has officially come to an end. Everyone on the team had a tremendous year, improving his/her times immensely by the end of the season. A special congratulations to freshman, Mason Hill, for advancing to the sectional meet with the time of 17:12. Because of the rain and harsh weather conditions, Mason took a tumble and wasn’t able to finish the race. He still had a great season and we are excited to see what he will bring to the team over the next three years!
Every good thing has to start somewhere. Comparable to a business graph, once sales start declining it’s hard to stop them, but when a business is booming, it’s hard to hinder its success. The PHHS Football Team is booming. And, it’s going to be incredibly hard to slow them down. Coming off of an 0 – 9 season full of blowouts, shutouts, and I’m sure a couple of other –outs and forming a playoff team from two schools who had never interacted prior to the co-op, except for on the basketball court as opponents, is far from declination in sales in the football business. Not only will the majority of the players be returning to put together another great season next year, but they have something other than an every-team-beats-us-every-game season to thrive off of. They will come back ready to compete. They will come back knowing what it feels like to win, and respecting the other teams knowing that losses may happen. This combination of retained emotions from this season will help them strategically approach each game as though there is no upper hand. Let the dogs loose.
After six long weeks of spending two hours learning about leadership on each Saturday, the time had finally arrived for the nine students of the second annual Leadership Academy to graduate. The Leadership Academy graduation took place on October 27th at the Center for Prevention of Abuse. The ceremony started at 6:30 and ended around 8:30. The nine students who graduated were: Gabby Williams, Taylor Peterson, Cole Reilly, Shawna Stewart, Davion Patterson, Madilyn Tortat, Kensey Schol, Kayla Martin and Taylor Hess. Roger Larson, the coordinator of Leadership Academy, spoke first and congratulated the graduates on a job well done. Michael Phelan, Eric Heath, and Joe Stoner all shared some encouraging words with the students. Madilyn, Cole, and Davion also presented speeches and each was very inspiring. Carol Merna, the Executive Director of the Center for Prevention of Abuse, gave her speech last and left all the graduates thinking about what the next step in their life is. Although they have already graduated, there is still much work to do. The group is now starting their project in which they have to design, coordinate, and lead a project all by themselves. Madilyn and Kensey have been elected as co-chairs for the project and Taylor Hess was elected as secretary. The Leadership Academy graduates have decided to do an appreciation night for the police department, the fire department, and the teachers. The group has also decided to do a fundraiser with all the proceeds going to the newly formed Richwoods Township/ Peoria Heights High School Leadership Academy Scholarship Fund. They will start their project next week and continue to work on it until May. Thank you to everyone who came together to make this program possible. This is a great experience that I will never forget.
